Abstract

This book arose out of the proceedings of the second mathematics conference of the Primary Association For Mathematics (PAM) and the Mathematical Association of New South wales (MANSW). MANSW runs an annual conference that caters for primary, secondary and post-secondary teachers. It was decided by some PAM members that there was a need for a primary school focused conference. The response to the conference proved that those members were correct and it was so successful that it is to become an annual event. The papers contained within this book include academic papers that were subjected to a blind review process by the International Panel of Reviewers and we are thankful to them for their support. Lingard and Renshaw (2010) argue that teaching should be both a research-informed and a research-informing profession. Not only should teachers have a "researchly disposition"Â but educational researchers should have a "pedagogical disposition" which would involve multiple forms of dissemination. The products of this dissemination blend applied and theoretical positions and acknowledge teachers and academic researchers as equal partners in the production of knowledge. It is this position that is adopted by the Primary Association for Mathematics and this book is a concrete example of the complementarity that exists between the two. It is a collection of academic papers that are highly relevant and applicable to the primary classroom as well as a collection of classroom focused papers involving teacher craft knowledge that reflect the findings of current research.
