Abstract

Social determinants, including cultural factors, significantly impact individuals' health beliefs, behaviors, help-seeking patterns, and health care utilization. Recognizing and accounting for cultural differences is crucial as the meanings and understanding of health, illness, and well-being are shaped by culture. This chapter provides an in-depth understanding of cultural determinants of health and their impact. It discusses definitions of culture, its role in shaping health, and the influence of cultural determinants on health beliefs, behaviors, and health care utilization. The chapter also highlights the intersection of culture and global mental health and the importance of qualitative research in cross-cultural research. Ethical considerations and language issues in cross-cultural research are addressed, including the unique challenges presented by linguistic and cultural differences. Researchers must recognize and account for these differences to conduct ethical cross-cultural research. They must effectively communicate research findings while protecting the identity of research participants. Overall, cultural factors play a significant role in shaping health outcomes, and understanding the impact of cultural determinants of health is crucial for improving health equity. This chapter provides valuable insights into the intersection of culture and health, highlighting the importance of cultural competence and ethical considerations in conducting cross-cultural research. By recognizing and addressing cultural differences, researchers can work towards improving health outcomes for all individuals, regardless of their cultural background.
