Abstract

The skin is the largest organ of the body and is richly supplied with specialized sensory endings of low mechanical threshold. These cutaneous mechanoreceptors allow us to feel the weak forces generated by a slight breeze and to differentiate between the textures and shapes of objects we touch and manipulate; they also contribute to proprioception.
