Abstract

CUTBACK explores the phenomenal rise of Australian street artists and the tensions between street credibility and gallery recognition. CUTBACK seeks to understand the 'key' to the street and graffiti addiction. The secretive world of street art and graffiti tensions becomes visible as we follow the meteoric rise of artist E.L.K. Luke Cornish from garage artist to sell out solo show, and finally the euphoria of his first international London gallery exhibition in under three years. With insightful commentary from graffiti and street artists, curators and collectors the Australian street art and graffiti scene is revealed. CUTBACK is a multi-platform web and feature documentary project filmed in Sydney, Melbourne, Berlin and New York City. Intimate interviews reveal the conflicted feelings and motivations of street artists as they gain notoriety and acceptance in the art world. A companion website www.cut-back.com.au provides an alternate narrative for self-navigation by audiences. Filmed between 2011-2014 CUTBACK includes interviews with Australian artists discussing their their motivations and frustrations. Feature artists in the documentary project include: E.L.K., DMOTE, MAKATRON, RONE, MEGGS, ZEROSIX, HAHA, KIDZOOM, VEXTA, FACTER, MINI GRAFF and PERSO.
