Abstract
Aquaculture and cyanobacteria are not usually discussed in the same forum even though it is an important topic and the relationship is at an important interface. It is representative of the anthropogenic pressures that are currently impacting on all species and every environment. Population growth, climate change, diminishing resources, energy demand, and environmental pollution are all accelerating at rates that were hardly imagined a century ago. Today, we find that aquaculture and cyanobacteria are intimately linked by these contemporary drivers. This chapter builds on previous examinations of this topic (Smith 2000, 2008). In this section, we will explore the link between cyanobacteria and aquaculture. In the following sections, we will examine the current scientific understanding in this multidisciplinary field and make an assessment of the level of risk posed by cyanobacterial toxins to seafood as well as consider possible future directions for research.
