    Abstract

![CDATA[A rationale for the prediction of the behaviour of a structure at high amplitude using data obtained from the motion of that structure at low amplitude is presented. The relationship between the low amplitude response and that at high amplitude is established through the medium of the non-linear damping characteristic. An example is given to show that the form of the prediction is consistent with actual behaviour of tall buildings at amplitudes that are typical of response in earthquakes.]]
