    Abstract

This chapter presents a case study showing how the repressive forces of the state were brought to bear on anti-eviction struggles in Sydney during the 1930s Depression. This deployment was stridently called for by the respectable and the propertied, who saw their powers challenged and their interests threatened in a social imaginary of bedlam, loss and destruction.
