Abstract
A half hour documentary exploring a landmark event in Australian History. Deliberation Nation charts the journey of the one hundred and fifty people who were randomly selected from each electorate to take part in Australia's first Citizens' Parliament last year. The documentary follows the participants as they spend four days investigating fresh options for Australia's political system, and how they negotiated the official report which was handed to the then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Associate Professor Kaye Shumack, from the School of Communication Arts, says the documentary is a chance for people to gain a rare insight into how a citizen's assembly such as this functions. "Deliberation Nation is essential viewing for anyone interested in politics," Associate Professor Shumack says. " It shows how a citizen's assembly engages a wide range of Australians in the political process in a thorough and meaningful way- through discussion about the ideals and processes of our democracy, and areas where improvements can be made." "Many people have an inaccurate idea of what a citizen's assembly is all about, and this documentary provides the perfect insight into how negotiation and deep conversation among ordinary people can help bring meaningful insights and suggestions for our democracy." Directed and produced by Kaye Shumack.
