Abstract
Demographic changes such as falling fertility rates, increasing life expectancy, migration, population ageing and localised population shrinkage are significant policy challenges that national, regional and local governments are facing. This chapter illustrates the demographic transition at the global level, and highlights the complexity and interplay of the socio-economic and policy factors impacting demographic change. The chapter draws on the analysis of key trends and provides a framework for analysis and assessment of demographic transition at regional levels.
