    Abstract

A set of instructional materials was developed and assessed in connection with a 20th Century music education curriculum project designed for use by Hong Kong music teachers. Initially the concept of "20th Century music"is discussed, then the reults of a survey are presented. In the survey and interview, teachers (14 primary + 12 secondary = 26) appreciated the value of the materials which could, however, be simplified and presented in more interesting ways. The correlations of usefulness with presentation and with quality indicated that primary teachers tended to find it useful to include interesting activities, exercises, illustrations and worksheets whereas secondary teachers expected substantial contents, rich information and high-quality accessories. The findings provided important information for the design of 20th Century music material in that they suggested that there needs to be a better balance between theory and practice in the materials with module developers considering developing a full set of instructional materials ready for classroom use.
