Abstract
This chapter focuses upon female populations that are of low socioeconomic status (SES), and or, have typically lower levels of engagement with physical activity and sport. As such, we examine a diverse population of women and girls who have not necessarily been represented in the previous chapters of this book. First, this chapter provides a literature review as a means of establishing a background and context, before turning to examine the concept of ‘low SES’ in relation to sport and physical activity among women. Following this, the barriers to engagement in sport among low SES and underserved female communities are discussed, and research issues and opportunities are considered. Afterward, this chapter then explores the potential practical actions and strategies that can be implemented as a means of enhancing engagement with this population. Finally, a case study of a cycling programme provides an example of these strategies in action.
