    Abstract

The circumstances and context of Australia's contemporary military engagement in Afghanistan and Iraq make a significant historical parallel with its role in occupied Japan. Each was linked by the political alliance with the United States that has shaped Australian geopolitics in the postwar period. From the Second World War, when the United States re-established its military command and Pacific operations in Australia, Australian foreign policy has tended to accord with the interests of the United States.
