Abstract

Disability is an important area of digital inequality research, policy, and practice. Offering a critical introduction to this vital topic, this chapter suggests that most of all, digital inequality theories, research, and interventions should be underpinned by contemporary approaches to disability. As well as doing justice to a neglected area, the payoff is also that disability offers a touchstone for understanding digital inequality. Disability has many constitutive connections with aspects of inequality, and disability also offers a window into the particular challenges of digital inequality - because of its distinctive relationships with technology and society. The chapter gives an overview of the research agenda in disability and digital technology and proposes key questions to orient future work productively.
