Abstract
In this paper, we study short-packet transmissions in a wireless powered communication network with distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In the system model, a device harvests energy from an access point (AP) and then transmits short data-packets to the AP. We first derive closed-form expressions of the average achievable rate and the average block error-rate (BLER). Based on this, the effective throughput and the average energy-efficiency (EE) are analyzed. Also, we propose a joint optimization of the transmit power and adaptive RIS activation for the maximal EE subject to the required BLER. Simulation results are provided to validate the analysis.
