Abstract
In 1922, W.H.R. Rivers dies, Robert Flaherty makes Nanook of the North, Malinowski publishes Argonauts of the Western Pacific, and TGH Strehlow witnesses the death of his father, Carl Strehlow, while on an epic journey to Horseshoe Bend, Central Australia - a journey which inspires his translations of Arrernte song and ethnographic filmwork for the next 50 years. What is it about the year, 1922 and the emergent practices of ethnography, documentary and ethnographic film? In this paper I would like to examine the relationship between ethnographic film and documentary within the special prism offered by early ethnographic filmmaking in Australia.
