Early writing in Nungon in Papua New Guinea

Abstract

Much literature on the acquisition of linguistic literacy is framed within the assumption that adults are literate. In Nungon-speaking society, however, there is no need for adult members of the community to read and write. This chapter surveys the situation of early literacy in a society in which literacy plays a minimal role.
