Abstract
People with dementia may experience a change in personality and impaired social function. At the onset of the disease, individuals may show signs of having difficulty with activities of daily living (ADLs) and as the disease progresses any mental and physical problems may become severe. Feeding and the ability to swallow is the last activity of daily living to deteriorate. Even though people in the early stages of dementia have an increased appetite (hyperphagia), difficulty with eating and swallowing (which, as the disease progresses, can lead to weight loss and undernutrition) will become increasingly evident (Amelia, 2008; Chang & Roberts, 2008; Keller, Edward & Cook, 2007).
