Abstract

Mitral valve disease has widespread global impact, contributing significantly to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. According to the American Heart Association, in the United States alone over 4 million people are affected with some form of mitral valve disease. The spectrum of disease affecting the mitral valve is diverse and stems from a wide range of causes that include infectious causes, such as rheumatic mitral valve disease, degenerative disease, and secondary causes, such as mitral valve regurgitation due to cardiac ischemia.
