Abstract
Methodological pluralism is a key feature of Ecological Economics (EE), but it creates some inherent contradictions. This article probes these characteristics of an important subject area that has major internal schisms. The neoclassical economics camp within EE focuses on formally rational analysis, weak sustainability and market solutions. The new environmental pragmatists also propose market-based solutions. The heterodox economics camp within EE takes a different approach, focusing on a pluralism of values, strong sustainability and the need for a change in the economic system. However, modelling how change will occur is rare. All camps can contribute to an analysis of the major changes that are is needed for achieving the political, intellectual and ideological objectives that stimulated the emergence of Ecological Economics.
