Abstract
Images are playing an increasingly important role in visualising ecologies in our complex, designed world. Yet what of the ecological and ontological character of images themselves? This short paper offers a proposition for understanding the image beyond representation as a dynamic form of design that takes hold of eye and mind, and that is as capable of violence and ecological destruction as any material form. Ecology of the image designates a critical and reflexive engagement with the environments we have designed for ourselves - including the environment of signs - but it also points to the crucial role of meaning making and image creation in the broad project of Sustainability.
