Abstract
Exhibited at Painted River Project: Blue Mountains Rare Upland Swamps, Margaret Whitlam Galleries, Whitlam Institute, 4 May – 8 July 2023,
Ecotone Expressions: Liminal spaces of the Blue Mountains Rare Upland Swamps aspires to ignite the viewer's imagination, evoke emotions, and inspire a deeper connection with the natural world, encouraging a renewed appreciation for the enchanting landscapes that surround us and acts as a reminder of the need to protect and cherish these irreplaceable ecological treasures.
The series delves into the mysterious and captivating microcosm of Sydney's Blue Mountains Rare Upland Swamps, with a particular focus on the ecotones; the enigmatic spaces where different ecosystems meet and interact. The work seeks to capture the emotional essence of these liminal spaces, where land and water, light and shadow, life and decay intertwine in an ever-shifting dance. Each piece explores the dynamic interplay of contrasting elements within the ecotones, and reveals the subtle nuances, tensions, and harmonies that arise in these transitional zones. Through abstraction, the intent is to transcend the literal representation of the landscape and delve into the realm of emotions, sensations, and perceptions, creating a visual symphony that resonates on a visceral level.
The work is an artistic response to the intrinsic beauty, fragility, and complexity of the Blue Mountains Rare Upland Swamps, offering a unique perspective that goes beyond conventional imagery. By capturing the ephemeral and elusive qualities of these liminal spaces, the audience is invited to contemplate the profound interconnectedness and delicate balance of nature, and to experience a heightened sense of wonder and reverence for these precious, yet often overlooked, ecosystems.
