Abstract

Epoxy adhesives are largely used adhesives for joining of substrates of similar and dissimilar materials. In this paper nanoclay/epoxy adhesive is developed by adding nanoclay particles into epoxy so as to enhance the lap shear strength of the epoxy adhesive joint. Different amounts of nanoclay such as 1, 2, 4 and 5 wt.% were dispersed into the epoxy using ultrasonication process. To determine the joint performance of the nanoclay/epoxy adhesive, single lap shear tests on aluminium substrates were conducted. It was observed that the lap shear strength of the adhesive bonded joints increased with the nanoclay content up to 4 wt.%. The results also indicated that increasing the amount of the nanoclay beyond a certain weight fraction reduced the shear strength of the joint. The distribution of the lap shear strength of adhesive joints is analysed using a two parameter Weibull distribution and it is found that the adhesive joints with nanoclay are found to have a Weibull modulus more than 20, indicating that the joints have reliable bonding strength. Fracture surfaces of the joints showed that the mode of failure progressed from adhesive to mixed mode failure with higher weight fractions of nanoclay contents.
