Abstract
![CDATA[The concrete structures which need to be strengthened by externally bonded (EB) FRP normally have existing cracks. In order to study the effects of the existing cracks on the bond slip relationship, an experimental program of single shear pull-out tests on EB-FRP concrete joints was performed in this research. Grooves were cut on the surface of concrete blocks before applying FRP on it to represent the existing cracks. The spacing and widths of the grooves were varied in different specimens. The test results show that there were two-sided effects of the existing cracks on the bond slip relationship. When the crack amount was great and the crack width was wide, it caused degradation of the bond slip relationship. However, a small number of thin cracks enhanced the bond slip relationship for a certain degree. The energy releasing at these cracks’ locations might be the reason for the improvement. It is also found that specimens with more than 10% concrete failure could have a relatively stable strength.]]
