Abstract

We are interested in what people are already doing to build economies that acknowledge and take account of our interdependencies with each other and with the world around. Scratch the surface of a globe that is supposedly becoming more and more capitalist and a bewildering array of solidaristic and communal initiatives can be found (sometimes even within capitalist enterprises themselves). When confronted with this proliferative heterogeneity we consciously contest capitalocentric conceptions of the economy. We refuse to fold economic difference into hegemonic representations of an ever inventive capitalism. Most importantly, we reject the notion that the economy is a force that cannot be changed by the efforts of people working together. To aid us in this quest we 1) employ a feminist critique of political economy 2) advance three forms of politics and 3) adopt a performative research practice. This brief essay introduces each of these key strategies for taking back the economy for people and the planet.
