Abstract
![CDATA[Although many institutions offering English language intensive courses for overseas students (ELICOS) are based in the university, Technical and Further Education (TAFE) and private education sectors, there are an increasing number of secondary schools entering the ELICOS market. Nevertheless, there remains a paucity of literature on school-based ELICOS operations involving teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). This paper explores the conceptual framework and history of a nationally accredited ELICOS curriculum for full-fee-paying international students at an independent school in Australia. Using a case study approach the paper discusses how one Australian school operates ELICOS as a TESOL service for international students. This paper focuses on the design of the program, organisation and management of ELICOS at the school and the pedagogy involved in implementing courses for international students who are preparing for entry into secondary schooling and pre-university foundation studies courses. The paper discusses the accreditation, planning and management involved in operating an ELICOS institution within a ‘mainstream’ school setting to guide schools in the independent education sector considering the establishment of an ELICOS institution.]]
