    Abstract

![CDATA[Our talk and everyday interactions shape our relationships and therefore our practices. Our communication is embedded in a set of assumptions about the world: 'a discourse', ie. the systems of language and social practices that exist in the world. Discourses are not just assumptions in our heads, but are visible in our talk and in the social practices and conventions that make up society as we know it. In this chapter we unpack the the discourse that separates 'theory' and 'practice'. Education designs programmes based on the notion that theory is a necessary foundation for practice, and that theory classes are separated from practice classes. However, most of us acknowledge in one way or another that the divide is artificial.]]
