    Abstract

    The article focuses on the national significance of the huge, arid deserts in Australia. It is noted that it has been seen as a sacred, spiritual place and has also been personified as the cruel enemy of colonial explorers. It is mentioned that the colonial press described the death in desert as an unimaginable horror. It is stated that the national identity has been shaped by 10 major deserts in Australia.
