Abstract
This article focuses on the events leading to the World Summit and charts how sustainable development has developed. Discussion begins with the history of sustainable development as a concept followed by an analysis of the difficulties posed by the lack of a precise definition. Its progress post the Earth Summit will be reviewed and the question as to whether it is a principle of international law will be canvassed. Its future as envisaged in the World Summit will also be examined followed by some concluding comments.
