    Abstract

Australian pre-service teachers have to acquire layers of knowledge to function in their multicultural school classrooms. To ensure they have acquired this knowledge they are assessed against a set of standards produced by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) which is the accreditation body created to ensure national consistency. The process of acquisition that occurs within a pre-service education program requires a variety of experiences and approaches that should be evaluated according to their contribution to knowledge. The focus of this presentation is: To what extent does the experience of a Malaysian educational and cultural tour contribute to the development of Australian pre-service teachers’ knowledge and to their attainment of recognised professional teaching standards? In answering this question the perceptions of Australian pre-service teachers who participated in the Overseas Professional Experience Program of Malaysian planned tours will be examined and discussed. The data set was collected through the use of questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussions.
