Endocrine cells micronests and ossification associated with an ovarian mucinous neoplasm: two rare findings

Abstract

The presence of neuroendocrine cells in the epithelium of ovarian mucinous neoplasms is common. However, clusters of such cells within the stroma of ovarian mucinous tumours have been reported rarely in the literature. These clusters are referred to as endocrine cell micronests (ECMs). Similarly, while calcification in ovarian neoplasms is a common phenomenon, ossification in association with an ovarian tumour is rare, except in mature cystic teratomas of the ovary. We describe a case of an ovarian mucinous borderline tumour, ECMs and bone formation.
