Engaging with the Working Mathematically strand through the use of iPads

    Abstract

The increasing popularity of computer tablets such as iPads has resulted in many primary schools in Australia investing in these technologies in the hope they will ultimately improve students’ learning outcomes. However, recent research into the use of iPads to teach primary mathematics has indicated the integration of the devices into teaching and learning activities is not without its challenges (Attard, 2013; Attard & Curry, 2012). This paper will explore some of the challenges identified and suggest some ways in which iPads could be used to enhance teaching and learning of mathematics while taking up the opportunities provided within the Working Mathematically strand of the new Mathematics K-10 Syllabus.
