Abstract
![CDATA[English language intensive courses for overseas students (ELICOS) are offered at a variety of institutions in Australia that provide the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) as a service for full-fee-paying international students. However, few of these institutions operate in the independent school sector and offer an ELICOS program designed particularly for students who are preparing for entry into secondary schooling and courses of further study in the context of an independent school. ELICOS in independent Australian schools has received little attention in the TESOL or education literature despite the growing expressions of interest from independent schools in offering nationally accredited ELICOS programs for international students. This paper discusses how an independent school in Sydney renewed its curriculum in the light of trends in the globalisation of TESOL and international student education to offer ELICOS to full-fee-paying students from overseas. The paper focuses on the provision of ELICOS as a service to international students and how an independent school can utilise the innovative pedagogy and organisational qualities of existing ELICOS operations. In particular the paper offers an examination of the course planning, accreditation, management, marketing, and evaluation processes that can be pivotal to providing ELICOS as a TESOL service in an independent school.]]
