    Abstract

The research project on which I report here took place in schools within some of the lowest SES communities in New South Wales (NSW), Australia (see Vinson, 2007: 71-74). These schools, students and teachers experience from the inside the reality of the fact that 'concentration of disadvantage rather than disadvantage per se is the significant driver of educational under-performance' (Erebus International, 2005: 15). Such concentration is generally a strong predictor of average school performance (Holmes-Smith, 2006).
