Abstract

This project set out to develop and test criteria for the evaluation of an acute health care redesign program at the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), focused on improving the patient journey. In the past 3.5 years, RAH has implemented a series of initiatives to improve the patient journey through innovative redesign. This study aims to develop holistic criteria to evaluate the impact and benefits of the Patient Pathways program initiatives by using Business Process Management Principles (BPM). The redesign component of the Patient Pathways Improvement model involves planning a change, performing a limited pilot of the change, studying the effects and then acting on the results. Improvements to the “Earlier Patient Discharge” stream are assessed as an exemplar of the criteria developed.
