Abstract
This paper presents the results and analysis of the behavior of an IP Security (IPSec) Virtual Private Network (VPN) operating over an IEEE 802.11b infrastructure. A comprehensive set of measurements on the average application throughput, packet loss, CPU utilization, and round trip delay for different traffic conditions are obtained and analyzed. The study reveals that an IPSec VPN tunnel has a significant impact on the throughput and CPU utilization at tunnel end points. The results also show that a VPN may have a positive effect on the actual queuing and packet loss taking place at the wireless interface. This paper further investigates the underlying causes for such performance degradations and makes appropriate recommendations to overcome them. It concludes by suggesting an optimum UDP payload size to achieve the maximum possible throughput.
