Abstract

Contemporary policing requires a labour force that is both educated and skilled, allowing for a flexible and agile approach to work in an ever-changing and dynamic world that police officers are employed to safeguard. In the same way professions such as law, teaching, social work and medicine require a labour force that is able to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing society, those employed in the police profession are no different. Yet police officers are seldom considered peers of lawyers, teachers, social workers and medical doctors; they are measured in their own unique way. It is therefore important to support police forces and the police officers they employ through education and specialised development, enabling police personnel to respond in a flexible and agile manner to the situations they encounter.
