Abstract
Women die, on average, at an older age than men. For more than 40 years we have known that this usual so-called female protection is lost in women with diabetes treated with insulin. Thus, in absolute terms, mortality rates are highest in men with type 1 diabetes, but the within-sex excess mortality in type 1 diabetes is higher in women than in similarly affected men.
