    Abstract

    The article begins by looking at the political rhetoric of the cloisonne tritych and it's statement of Japan's changing vision of itself in the world. It then considers the broader context of the Japanese project at Chicago, the poitical imperatives of the Exposition, and the various semiotic and strategic functions of Japanese art at this event.
