Abstract

![CDATA[This chapter introduces an innovative approach to the autoethnographic methodology of research and writing: exo-autoethnography. In its initial development, exo-autoethnography was established for the purpose of researching intergenerational trauma transmission, which will be detailed in this chapter. Exo-autoethnography analyzes the impact of trauma transmission from parents to children through research participants’ experiences—and the personal experiences of the researcher themselves—of an upbringing influenced by parental trauma. The chapter will examine and defne the exo-autoethnographic method as a process of research into and writing about the intergenerational transmission of trauma with reference to my research on the impact of the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989) on the first post- Soviet generation. Though the current focus of the method is on war-related intergenerational trauma transmission research, there is scope to adapt exoautoethnographic method into other research areas, which I encourage, such as collective trauma analyses, family and community history, family migration, disability studies, and state-sanctioned violence.]]
