Abstract
![CDATA[The interdisciplinary research presented in this workshop highlights the synergies between outdoor learning and a therapeutic intervention grounded in Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). Underpinned by the aim of developing increased self-awareness, behaviour management skills, and positive future narratives, our study included the development of an eight--week intervention, with pre- and post-testing and a capstone event, for 9-12 year old students with behavioural and emotional challenges. The innovative research incorporated ACT principles with adventure therapy and outdoor learning throughout the development and facilitation of the program. ACT has emerged as a popular behavioural change technique that has been applied to address a wide range of challenges (Barney et al., 2017; Coyne, McHugh, & Martinez, 2011; Enoch & Dixon, 2017; Ghomian & Shairi, 2014; Hayes & Ciarrochi, 2015; Ruiz, 2010. Multiple experiential activities were adapted and implemented within the ACT approach in order to engage students in developing psychological flexibility, life skill development, and coping strategies. Student participation was uniquely enhanced through movement experiences, culminating in a symbolic bushwalk, and a place-based arts experience with a local Aboriginal elder.]]
