Abstract

![CDATA[Background: Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) analysis is a complex skill requiring highly developed visual perceptual skills and clinical interpretation. Currently limited guidance exists as to the most effective methods for developing analytical accuracy in VFSS. As consistency and efficiency of VFSS analysis varies within and across clinical contexts, understanding factors that influence skill development is important. Aim(s): The aim of this study was to collate the views of expert speech pathologists involved in training clinicians to analyse VFSS in order to identify: (a) factors that influence the development of analytical accuracy and, (b) perspectives regarding best training models. Method: Nine speech pathologists participated in in-depth interviews regarding their experience of training novice VFSS analysts. Interview topics followed a semi-structured interview guide, were orthographically transcribed, and analysed thematically. Result(s): Common themes were aligned with the type of training used in facilities and the characteristics of the trainees. With regards to andragogy, participants identified the importance of intensity and time in training, the use of an agreed rating scale, usefulness of discussion with peers, and the importance of preparatory tasks. A number of trainee factors also influenced development of accuracy. Conclusion: Knowledge of potential factors that influence development of VFSS analytical skill will support VFSS trainers to provide appropriate preparatory activities and tailor VFSS training according to the needs and abilities of individual trainees. Trainees may benefit from an understanding of barriers to and facilitators of their skill development. Exploring learner-related themes may also allow researchers to better understand avoid confounding influences related to their participants’ cognitive and perceptual features.]]
