Abstract

Professional carers have important roles to play when loss permeates the lives of people with an intellectual disability (PWID), particularly at the end of life. The overarching aim of this chapter is to critically explore end-of-life care from the professional carer perspective and community context. The literature informing the chapter is drawn mainly from the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA) and Australia. The literature does not limit itself to the intellectual disability (ID) sector, and where relevant, information is also drawn from the general community. A progressive case study has been woven throughout to illustrate salient points as they develop from diagnosis onwards.
