Faceless and facework commitment : an exploration of birthing women's trust toward expert systems within a risk society

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

    Abstract

Risk, according to the work of Beck has become a force of social change. It can be seen to actively shape our concept of health, trust and our relationship to experts and technology. It is these themes which can provide insight into not only the agency of women who seek medical intervention during pregnancy and childbirth, but also those who actively avoid it. The emphasis on the importance of trust and the expert within the risk society will be further explored within this chapter by examining Australian women's approach to medical experts and systems within the maternity health care services.
