    Abstract

![CDATA[Although most of the construction firms have established their safety management systems on the construction sites, it seems that there are difficulties in the effective implementation of these systems. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence the effective implementation of safety management systems on building construction sites in Australia. A multiple-case study approach was used to achieve the aim of this study. Five typical building construction firms in Sydney were selected as the subjects of the multiple-case study. Data were collected through documentation and interviews. The results of this study revealed the major barriers (e.g., stakeholders’ attitudes, tendering process and alcohol and drugs) of the effective implementation of safety management systems on construction sites. The analyses and findings of this pilot study will inform the development of a survey instrument for the next stage of the project which aims to develop a theoretical framework for effective implementation of safety management systems on construction sites.]]
