N2 - Family group conferencing (FGC) is a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) that seeks to engage extended family in decision-making processes and strengthen partnerships between families and the NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). FGC can be used at the point of considering removing children and placing them in out-of-home care (OOHC) or other points throughout the child protection service continuum. Caseworkers speak to families and, if they agree, initiate the FGC process. The District FGC Coordinator organises a referral to an independent facilitator, who is contracted but not employed by DCJ. The facilitator contacts the family and other people important to the family, which may include members of their extended family and social networks, Aboriginal Elders and service providers who already provide support, to invite them to a meeting.
