Abstract
The date range of this paper roughly coincides with Governor Macquarie's opening of three institutions for women and children" a new orphan school for girls at Parramatta and for boys in Sydney and the New Female Factory at Parramatta and continues to the end of transportation to New South Wales in 1840. The relationships of these women with their children provide a different perspective on the workings of the convict administration. It is possible to see the strategies of these women as they negotiate work and remarriage. These experiences provide evidence particularly of the resilience of their family and kinship networks whilst their negotiations with the authorities allow us to hear their voices through their letters.
