Abstract
This paper explores what civic engagement may mean to young males in Australia, and the role that sports may play in developing or enhancing civic engagement amongst young males. A review of worldwide literature discusses many of these aspects, with particular focus (emerging from the author’s own doctoral research with young males) being given to the dimensions of ‘a sense of belonging to community’, ‘a sense of contribution to community’, and ‘sport as a pathway to social activism and resistance’.
