    Abstract

![CDATA[In this paper we discuss the application of Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) tools in computer forensics education at tertiary level. We argue that FLOSS tools are more suitable than commercial tools, as they provide the opportunity for students to gain in-depth understanding and appreciation of the computer forensic process. In addition the availability of all sources allows the students to become not just the consumers of the tools as future forensic investigators, but also the future creators of new and improved tools. As a case study we present an advanced subject, Computer Forensics Workshop, which we designed for the Bachelor’s degree in computer science at the University of Western Sydney. Most of the laboratory work in this subject is based on FLOSS tools. We also share our experience of delivering this subject to a mixed group of third year students and practising computing professionals.]]
