    Abstract

Fluid assessment is a skill which nephrology nurses perform routinely when preparing a patient for dialysis and is well within their scope of nursing practice. This paper reviews the concept of nursing competence and presents a competency assessment package for fluid assessment which can be used by differing levels of nephrology nurses to enhance their career progreesion and nephrology nursing practice. The competency package comprises two parts. The first section consists of a learning package, which describes the processes and sources of information used to perform a fluid assessment. The second section consists of the various tools used to assess competence in fluid assessment. The final component of this paper is an explanation of the educational, ethical and managerial considerations in implementing the competency assessment package.
