Abstract

There is a common presumption that successful leadership is about the leader alone, and that organizational success is reflective of the quality of leadership. In contrast, the importance of followership in organizations and teams – including surgical teams – is often overlooked. Certainly, followership has been understudied: far more books and articles have been written about leadership than followership. For example, one online catalogue revealed over 30 000 titles on leadership but just 62 on followership. A PubMed literature search revealed over 57 000 articles on leadership and just under 100 on followership, a ratio of over 600:1 since 1952.
